I don't know how to do it or exactly what it means, but I know it would be nice if I could be 'the bigger person' (which to be clear means the more mature and reasonable person in a given situation or dispute).
But then is it always better to be the bigger person? Sometimes taking that role just seems to fan the flames and perhaps even crush some personal enjoyment. Maybe it's even a fiction, a way of handling a situation that gets its bigness from a biased source that seems highly predisposed to view the action(s) as big at the time, so as to conform with the other self-views intimately entwined with the source. The classic sour grapes scenario.
Over time one can and usually does change their idea about what the bigger person ought to do in the same situation. So who is 'the bigger person' then in the end? Does he/she even exist? Isn't she/he merely a slowly evolving consensus of tradition?
Maturity and reasonableness have become quantifiable in a way that allows some kind of ranking. Ok, so an answer emerges. But it's a thinner one than we may have thought. So thin that it may now lack the power to even be considered 'big'.
